Installing and Updating Java™

To install Java™, visit http://www.java.com using your web browser, and follow the directions there.

Java is a product of Sun Microsystems, Inc. This TicketRx documentation includes a basic overview of how to keep Java up-to-date. For detailed, official Java documentation, visit the web site above.

Keeping Java Up To Date

There are two ways to update Java via the Update tab:

  1. Automatic Update
  2. Manual Update

Java requires Administrative privileges within Windows to perform these updates.

The screens below are similar to those provided by Java version 1.4 and higher. For a machine with an older version, we recommend uninstalling Java, then reinstalling it by visiting Java.com.

Automatic Update

In the Windows Control Panel, open the Java settings. Click the Advanced… button on the Update tab. The Advanced… button is circled in red in the figure below.

After the Advanced… button is clicked, the Automatic Update Advanced Settings dialog box will open. In this dialog box, you can set the frequency and the time when the system checks for new Java updates. The Automatic Update Advanced Settings dialog box is shown below:

Here you can configure Java updates as often as you like. We recommend the weekly setting.

Depending on the setting of the Notify Me drop-down box, the system will notify you either before downloading the update or before installing it. If you select the "before downloading" option, it will also notify you before installing. The Notify Me drop-down box is shown below:

Manual Update

If you click the Update Now button on the Update tab described above, the system will check to see if there is a newer version of Java available. If a newer version of Java is available, it will be downloaded and installed. The Update Now button is circled in red in the figure below.
